Phoenix Comicon ’12, I’m Ready
I can’t believe it’s almost been a year since we covered our first convention event. Before I begin sharing what will be happening this year, I’d like to announce that since I will be the only one covering EVERYTHING, photobombing is a low priority. I know, I died a little inside too. But don’t you worry! When I get a chance to photobomb, I’ll make it count.
George Takei Is The Best Thing To Hit Facebook Since…
Man, don’t you remember the days when fake celebrity accounts on Facebook were just a drag? Sure, that Free iPad sounds super great and your interloper may have spent a super long time studying up on the celebrity they’re impersonating, but once the trick’s revealed, doesn’t the trick seem… less? Riding a new wave from last May’s “It’s Okay To Be Takei“, some glorious bastard has taken up the mantle (or Takei just hired a guy) to promote it with a cleverly updated Facebook page that seems to revel in its in-authenticity. Is George Takei the best thing to ever hit Facebook? Ever?
Hulu’s Ad Tailor Thinks I’m An 18-35 Year Old Woman
I don’t like TV, but I love Hulu. Much like a DVR, it allows me to skip all the necessity of having to wait around for something I like to pop up on the screen and then watch it. I grew up on the stuff, but our relationship fell apart in much the same way that mine did with radio: having to stick around to hear people’s crappy playlists sucks. With Hulu, I can cut away time to watch a handful of shows on my own time without having to resort to piracy. But the ads on Hulu. The ads…
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy Review: The Best Poker Face In The Room
Gary Oldman plays expert spy George Smiley in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Tomas Alfredson’s slick but occasionally muddled adaptation of John le Carre’s classic spy thriller. Alfredson directs the film with the same inventiveness and eye for detail that he brought to the brilliant Let the Right One In, and the cast is stellar. However, the film suffers from being a two hour adaptation of a complex and detailed novel. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is a good movie but not a great movie.
Melancholia Review: Interplanetary Danse Macabre
Melancholia tells the tale of two sisters who attend a wedding party and soon after receive front row seats for the end of the world. Kirsten Dunst gives a career high performance as a clinically depressed bride and Charlotte Gainsbourg plays her compassionate sister. Certifiable madman Lars von Trier takes up writing and directing duties.
’21 Jump Street’ Review – Don’t Watch This Unless You Want To Laugh Your Ass Off
At two points in the theater for 21 Jump Street, I had to physically stop myself from laughing or I would go into a spasm. This movie is fast and absurd and I haven’t seen anything this humorous in years. It’d be easy to pass this off as another ‘stupid Jonah Hill’ movie, but it’s simply got too much going on. You need to get in the theater and see it. Today.
Whiskey Media (Giant Bomb, Screened, Tested) Is Breaking Up, A Tear Runs Down My Cheek
Today, the crew of Whiskey Media’s flagship publication – Giant Bomb – went over the internet airwaves to announce that the House That Shelby Bonnie Built was being ripped in half. They, along with Comic Vine, would be headed to CBS Interactive, home of Gamespot (where many of Giant Bomb’s founders originated) while Tested, Screened, and Anime Vice would be owned by Santa Monica-based BermanBraun. Should Whiskey’s fans be happy or mad at the transaction?
The Descendants Review: Sad Clooney
A disintegrating family finds salvation in Alexander Payne’s The Descendants, a tender dramedy starring George Clooney and Shailene Woodley. I actually caught this movie back in November, but as I wasn’t with Flesh Eating Zipper back then and as this movie was just released on Blu Ray this week, now seems like a good time to revisit it. Also, my sister lectured me to try being a little less pessimistic in future reviews and the best way to do that, to my mind, is to review a movie that I’ve already seen and liked.
John Carter Review: Shut Up Already
A Civil War veteran finds himself transported to Mars where he proceeds to involve himself in a planetary war. He becomes a warrior chief, falls in love with a princess, and goes on adventures. How the fuck can you possibly make that boring? Well, watch Disney’s John Carter and you’ll find out.
Community is Back From Mid-Season Hiatus Finally [VIDEO]
Check out this awesome trailer that aired during The Soup for the return of Community. I’m glad Community is coming back and not yet cancelled. The staff here has a split opinion when it comes to Community, mainly Johnny hates it and everyone else loves it. Just kidding, Johnny doesn’t totally hate it. Read the rest of this article…
