Is Pitchfork’s Childish Gambino Review Ironic Or Clueless?

Between Ian Cohen’s rabble on Donald Glover’s latest musical odyssey (you know, the black guy from Community) and a bout of indigestion, I lost a lot of sleep this morning. Yeah, I realize Pitchfork’s scribble came out some time ago and I don’t know how I missed it because I knew it’d be some arbitrary score removed from the zeitgeist. I was right. We gave the album a 10 out of 10 and while it’s not a perfect disc, it’s got catchy, fun songs and it serves well, as our review mentions, as a gateway to other rap. Looking over to Metacritic’s handful of scores, Pitchfork stands alone at a lowly 1.6, so either reviewer Ian Cohen is completely right, or he’s simply an Armond White for music. 2011 In Movies: The Best, The Worst, And The Meh

2011 In Movies: The Best, The Worst, And The Meh

I can’t count how many times I wanted to go out and see Dylan Dog: Dead of Night, even as it’s readily available on Netflix now, just to see how truly awful it was. On the flip side, I’d also really like to see Brandon Routh start to take hold as an actor, but it just doesn’t look like that’s gonna happen. Dylan Dog serves as sort of a template for the year as far as movies go, in which the lowest lows were probably just as appetizing (on an ironic basis) as the best films, of which the weren’t many. At a glance, we knew we were getting another Pirates film, another Harry Potter, another Twilight, and another Transformers flick, all of which were known quantities, which lights the problem: there was a complete lack of surprise in 2011. So how did this year’s movies fare, so far as the ones that I caught? Let’s give it a look…

Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol Review

Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol Review

You’re a high tech spy thousands of miles from home, disavowed. All you have left are three partners-in-crime and a train car full of your agency’s last high-tech goodies. You just allegedly bombed the Kremlin and you’ve got to prevent a nuclear holocaust. So what do you do? Anything you can. Produced by Tom Cruise (of course) and JJ Abrams (who directed the series’ last outing), the viewfinder has been passed onto animator Brad Bird, who made the excellent The Iron Giant and The Incredibles and has now made an incredibly slick action thriller in Ghost Protocol, his live-action debut.

The Expendables 2 Teaser Trailer Released

We knew this was coming but I wasn’t as pumped to see the movie until I watched this teaser trailer. Sure, the first movie wasn’t really that great of a movie but you watch these movies because you are a god damn man and men like guns and explosions and shit like that. It’s just a teaser and they don’t really show off anything except GUNS, flash of actor, GUNS, GUNS. Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger are back and may have bigger roles than their cameos this time. Also a couple other new faces are in the teaser like CHUCK NORRIS and JEAN-CLAUDE VAN DAMME! Playboy Out Of The Way, Lindsay Lohan Needs To Stop Doing Anything, Everything

Playboy Out Of The Way, Lindsay Lohan Needs To Stop Doing Anything, Everything

Let’s get on the same page here: looking at the leaked cover for the newest edition of Playboy, I can’t help but think they could’ve done just as well just painting Lindsay to canvas, rather than starting with a real photo and working backwards through the wonder of technology. While mag cover photoshoppery (or “air brushing” as it was once known) is nothing new, and is in fact quite expected, it’s not hard to see the metaphor here. Lindsay Lohan would simply be better off as the product of our mind’s eye, a construct of her potential, rather than what she actually is.

Stephen King’s “11/22/63” Review

Stephen King’s “11/22/63” Review

I suppose if you’re going to write a narrative involving time travel, you should do something big with it, like save President John F. Kennedy’s life from a communist marksman on a bright Dallas day. At nearly 900 pages, there’s plenty of heft here and a lot of universe building. It’s obvious that Mr. King spent a lot of time and effort researching the five year span before Kennedy’s assassination and he’s ready to contrast it with our cleaner, internet-friendly 2011 just to show you how he still is. This review is going to have plenty of spoilers, so unless you’ve read the book, I’ll just say this: it’s well worth your time. It’s not a great book, but it’s a great adventure in a time long before many of us were born.
