‘Dear Esther’ Review – A Lonely Stroll Through Art
There was a watershed moment in the early 90s with the introduction of the CD-ROM to gaming. While consoles and floppy disk-based PCs were chugging along with hand-drawn art and MIDI-based music, CD-ROMs allowed for full-motion video (FMV) and fully orchestral scores that heightened the presentation dramatically. Back then, games like Myst or The 7th Guest brought you into crazy new worlds of incredible detail that only the shiny disc could allow. Pre-rendered movies allowed for an exponential leap in visuals because home PCs at the time weren’t even slightly capable of processing the visuals stored within in real-time. On the flip-side, the problem is that interactivity, especially early on, was limited, and video by nature is an inherently linear medium. These new ‘movie/art games’ had little deviation and as a result, had very little immersion.
Why do I bring this up? Because twenty years later, Dear Esther fulfills the promise of art in an interactive medium.
Is EVE Online The Best Massively-Multiplayer Game Ever Made?
The Massively Multiplayer Online game is an interesting idea. I mean, just put it on paper: imagine a gaming experience in which each character is another human somewhere on the planet. Far more than a glorified chat room, an MMO allows for not only an expansive universe to reside in, but persistent gameplay that gives you a reason to dive in, and furthermore, a reason to keep coming back. I’ve explained my tentative relationship with these games before, but it seems to me that EVE Online has worked the hardest to fulfill the genre’s potential, even with World of Warcraft dominating and Star Wars: The Old Republic doing well in its own regard. But does that make EVE Online a good game in its own right?
Gotham City Impostors Review – Already a Candidate for Shooter of the Year?
When it comes to Batman themed games very few have actually been any good, the most recent ‘Arkham’ titles being the only two of note, but if you don’t mind getting all silly-like, Gotham City Impostors is probably right up there with the best of them. Read the rest of this article…
‘Syndicate’ Review – The First Great Shooter Of 2012
This game came out of nowhere and won my heart. The trailer did it first, then the multi-player demo followed up. If an analogy must be made, it must be that Syndicate is a faster-paced Deus Ex: Human Revolution. In the single-player, you’re cast as agent Miles Kilo, a testbed for a powerful new weapons chip that the titanic EuroCorp is about to leverage against its corporate rivals. While the single-player can be a little ho-hum, it’s the co-op multiplayer where the game really shines. Unfortunately, I know many who will be turned away on that fact alone.

Star Wars: The Old Republic – Patch 1.1.4 Is Live
BioWare today released the latest update to SWTOR, in patch 1.1.4. I’ve had a chance to do some playing since it came out and it SEEMS that this one didn’t break anything.
I KNOW, RIGHT?!
Well, since it didn’t break anything (that I know of), which means I have nothing to complain about (yet) I’ll just go ahead and drop the patch notes for everyone to have a look at.
