Paramount And Penny Arcade To Adapt “The New Kid” To Silver Screen
The Hollywood Reporter just broke news that Paramount is bringing Penny Arcade’s showcase concept “The New Kid” to theaters. The script is being penned by Gary Whitta, writer of The Book of Eli (I’d also followed Whitta during his tenure as EIC of PC Gamer), marking a step in the right direction by the Penny Arcade crew.
Growing Up TV: Sonic the Hedgehog: The Animated Series
Sonic is one of the most iconic symbols in gaming history and back when his games were good, we found his first animated series aired every Saturday morning. When the parents were still sleeping I got up at 6am every morning to watch this show. Whether you owned a Sega Genesis or not, this show was the subject of much talk.
(Comic) Book Review – Spiralmind By Phi 3
So here’s the deal. I’m not really much of a comic book person but after interviewing the guys from Phi 3 and talking about their comic series “spiralmind”, I was intrigued. Matt and Benito hooked me up with signed copies of the first 2 comics in the series (COLLECTOR’S ITEMS, BITCHES!! EAT IT!) and then I ruined them by cracking them open to give them a read through so I could review them.

Phoenix Comicon – Johnny’s Take
It’s 1 a.m. on Saturday and the hotel lobby is full of people.
Correction: The hotel lobby is full of characters.
Aliens and monsters, heroes and zombies. Everyone is in costume as a character from TV, film, comic books and video games. It’s like an emergency meeting of the Justice League… if Mario, the Predator, Darth Vader and Pikachu were members.
Even the lobby music is not the usual ambient stuff – they’re playing the theme from Star Wars.
Welcome to Phoenix Comicom 2011…
Growing Up TV: Samurai Pizza Cats
Samurai Pizza Cats (Cat Ninja Legend Teyandee in Japan) was the first enjoyable anime show I watched as a kid. English versions of the show took pot shots at the Ninja Turtles, modern day events, and even pop stars like Madonna.
Movie Review: Renaissance
I was hooked on Renaissance‘s look at first. At a time when A Scanner Darkly and Sin City were making the rounds, this sneaky little French animation peaked my interest. I didn’t know why, but it took me a good half a decade to find a copy of this movie at a reasonable price – namely, $5 at Fry’s. That said, there’s a good reason why this movie’s hard to find: it’s not very good.
Best/Worst Costumes Of Phoenix Comicon
It wouldn’t be a con without folks dressing up as their favorite Star Wars character. Typically, these people are called cosplayers — short for costume players. And we took about as many pictures of them as our little fingers could. Check out the best of the best and best of the worst — you decide after the break!
Growing Up TV: Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers
Back when the Power Rangers began their first season (which is hard to imagine nowadays) I found myself spellbound in front of the TV set. Produced by Saban and debuting on August 28, 1993, the Power Rangers were chosen by a Wizard of Oz-ish leader known as Zordon, accompanied by Alpha 5 (think: Robot from Lost in Space).
An Outsiders Look Into Phoenix Comicon
Ah, yes. Comic conventions — a swarming geekfest typically held at a giant assemblage center where people will dress up in elaborate costumes for no other reason than to be seen. That is exactly what I thought before my eyes were opened to what really happens.
Growing Up TV: Freakazoid!
Mild mannered computer hacker Dexter Douglas (Paul Rugg) gets sucked into the internet and becomes the nutty superhero Freakazoid. First airing on September 9, 1995, Freakazoid! was a great source of comic relief, airing around the same time as Earthworm Jim. Like that show, this has plenty of off-key and crass jokes which had me rolling as a kid, and villains with names just as absurd like “The Lobe” (a villain with an exposed brain for a head).
